Description: The Doberman Pinscher is an agile, active dog. The dog will be 26 to 28 inches at the shoulder, with the bitch 2 inches less. Depending on the sex, the Doberman will weigh between 60 and 88 pounds. The Doberman Pinscher has a short, hard coat that can be black with tan markings, black, red, blue, or fawn. The ears are usually cropped, then taped so that they will stand upright. The tail is ordinarily docked. The Doberman is a very fast dog with great stamina. It is an extremely intelligent dog and is easily trainable. This dog can live to be 15 to 20 years old. The Doberman is also called the Dobe.

History: This breed owes its origins to a German tax collector called Karl Louis Doberman. He needed a dog to protect him when he carried sums of money through dangerous regions. Doberman was also in charge of a dog pound and used some of the inmates there in his breeding program. Because he was particularly fond of the way the Miniature Pinscher looked, he used it to develop the physical standard of the breed. By 1876, the Doberman Pinscher appeared in its first dog show.

The Doberman is a dog of German descent, developed by Karl Freidrich Louis Dobermann between 1864 and 1889. Herr Dobermann was a tax collector in Apolda, a German town in the state of Thuringia. He was also in charge of keeping local strays off the street and in the dog pound. Louis Dobermann carried money with him on his tax collecting rounds, and wanted a dog for protection.

In Argentina in the 1920's, the two Martinez brothers decided to breed a dog which would be equally skilled at hunting and killing wild boar, puma and mountain lions, and also defending the owner and his family, his property and his flocks. This dog was the Dogo Argentino.

They started with the then most valued hunting dog in their native Argentina, the Cordoba, which was bred from the fighting bulldog and the Spanish mastiff. The brothers identified which characteristics they wanted in their dog, and then over two decades bred in these attributes from 10 different breeds.

The origin and history of the Dogo Argentino dog breed begins, as evidenced by its name, in Argentina in the province of Cordoba. In fact, it is the only recognized dog breed in existence today that originates from this South American country. The Dogo Argentino (or sometimes the Argentinian Mastiff) was developed primarily by Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez with the help of his brother Agustin. The brothers were both dog lovers and also avid hunters. Martinez wanted a dog that was a great hunter, fierce and loyal, with great stamina and endurance while also being a great family pet and guardian. In the 1920s Dr. Martinez developed this large breed dog by methodically and carefully crossing about ten different breeds together.
